Whats ECE R118?
ECE R118 is an important regulation on vehicle interior materials issued by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The following is a detailed introduction:
- Full name of the regulation: "Uniform Technical Provisions on the Combustion Characteristics and Fire-Resistant or Lubricant Performance of Materials Used in the Internal Structure of Certain Types of Motor Vehicles".
- Scope of application: Mainly applicable to M3, Class II and Class III vehicles, that is, large public transportation vehicles with more than 22 passengers, non-standing passengers and non-urban use (urban buses), such as buses and long-distance coaches with large passenger capacity. It involves decorative materials used in the interior of these motor vehicles, such as seat fabrics, interior panels, carpets, insulation materials, plastic parts, sun visors, sunshades, seat leather covers, wiring harnesses, sealing strips, etc.
- Main content: ECE R118 is mainly divided into two parts, one is the certification of vehicle models regarding the combustion characteristics of internal structural materials used between passengers; the other is the certification of the combustion characteristics of components (materials, seats, curtains, partitions, etc.). The regulations stipulate a series of test methods, the main test items include horizontal combustion, vertical combustion, molten drop test, material resistance to fuel or lubricant performance test, wire and cable flame propagation resistance test.
- Purpose and significance: Aims to regulate the combustion characteristics of certain types of motor vehicle interior materials to improve the safety of vehicles in fires, ensure that when a fire occurs, the interior materials of the vehicle will not accelerate the spread of the fire, and minimize the release of toxic gases, reducing the risk of casualties in the event of a fire.
